Our History

In 2006, Kathy Seward drove 750 miles from Rockville, Indiana to Brookings, South Dakota. Kathy had a vision and her spirit could not rest until she followed through. Twenty years ago, Kathy was a young bright college student at SDSU. She was excited about her future and eager to see her dreams come true. At what seemed like the worst possible time, Kathy found herself pregnant and scared, so Kathy went looking for answers. After discussing this with trusted friends and advisors, Kathy decided to follow the advice she was given and abort her unborn child.

Immediately, following the abortion, Kathy knew that she had made a terrible mistake. Kathy realized that the advice that she had received, though well intended, contributed to Kathy’s making a decision that she would regret for the rest of her life. In the years that followed, Kathy suffered from guilt, shame, and regret and a deep sorrow for the child that she would never get to meet. “If only someone would have encouraged me to have my baby, if only a person would have said to me-you can do this or at least explained to me my options.”

Upon arriving in Brookings, Kathy explained to local church leaders, that Brookings should indeed have a pregnancy center, where girls and women can go to learn and hear about all of their options and where these females would not be “pressured” to choose abortion. “Like many women, I was made to feel that given my present circumstances that abortion was the only logical choice for me.” Kathy envisioned a place where women would feel safe, loved, supported and encouraged. Kathy then, returned to Rockville Indiana, and waited to see if the seeds which she had planted while in Brookings would eventually yield fruit.

In 2010, Elizabeth’s House opened its doors and began to see clients, many of whom were SDSU students. In 2013 Elizabeth’s House changed its name to Option 1 Women’s Health Center in a strategic effort to reach a broader client base. Recently, Kathy Seward returned to Brookings to attend a donor event and to see the organization’s progress. Kathy was thrilled and deeply moved at the amount of effort that had been given to make her dream and the hopes of many others in the Brookings area a reality. Kathy gives all of the credit to God for making all of this possible
